Sunday Questions on Tuesday

A couple of bloggers I read often, Stacy over at A Mile in My Shoes and Linda at Just Simply Linda, did these “Sunday Stealing” questions, which they found at the blog Blue Country Magic. I thought they were interesting so I am  joining in.  Here are my answers to these 20 questions about me and my life.

1. What is your occupation right now?

I’m a high school English teacher.

2.  What color are your socks right now?

Gray

3.  What are you listening to right now?

A Christian/current events podcast.  I’ve actually been going back and forth between several podcasts and Youtubes as I type this post. I listen to one thing for a while, then change to something else.

4.  Who was the last person you spoke to on the phone?

My son who attends college in Idaho

5.  How old are you today?

Sixty-something

6.  What is your favorite sport to watch on TV?

I don’t watch any sports on TV right now, but in the past, we have watched baseball - mostly The World Series.

7.  What is your favorite drink?

Water

8.  Have you ever dyed your hair?

Just once.  I had my hair lightened when I was in my 20s.  I’ve always been blonde, but my hair darkened a bit when I was pregnant.  After my 2nd child was born, the woman who cut my hair convinced me to lighten my hair, but I did it only once because I hated those darker roots that appeared after a few weeks.  I’ve never colored my hair again.  My current color, still blonde, is completely my natural color.  I haven’t gone gray or white - yet.

9.  What is your favorite food?

There are several things I really enjoy - pizza, Mongolian beef, orange chicken, pot roast, grilled cheese sandwiches, kettle chips, pistachios.  I am really try to stay away from sugar and sugary foods as much as possible.

10.  What is the last movie you watched?

I think the last movie I watched was The Six Triple Eight - an excellent Netflix movie about the only Women’s Army  Corps unit of color in WWII.  I would highly recommend this historical film.

11.  Favorite day of the year?

Any day that I can spend with people I love - my husband, children and/or grandchildren is a favorite.

 12.  How do you vent anger?

I may raise my voice and utter an inappropriate word.  These are both things I am not proud of and need to work on overcoming.

13.  What was your favorite toy as a child?

I really enjoyed playing with Barbies and Lego and riding my bike.

14.  What are your living arrangements?

I live in a 70-year-old single-family house with my husband.  Our youngest son may move back in with us in a few months after he graduates from college.  He will need to get a job and save up some money so we have told him he can move back home for about six months after graduation.  When I retire, we will be selling the house we live in now and moving.

15.  What was the last thing you cried about?

I can’t remember the exact circumstance.  Family drama and family problems and issues I can't solve make me very sad.

16.  Who is the friend you've had the longest?

My oldest friend is probably my cousin.  She is about 18 months younger than I am and we have been friends since childhood.

17.  What did you do last night?

Sunday evening, I finished a weekend blog post, worked on a puzzle while listening to an audiobook and podcast and then read before bed.

18.  What are you most afraid of?

At this moment in time, I am very fearful of many things transpiring in our society at large, and in our country (the USA) specifically.  No matter where a person is politically, there are some very troubling things going on.  The extreme division in the country also concerns me.

19.  In how many areas of your country have you lived?

I have lived in seven states - all in the West and Midwest - Colorado, Utah, Oklahoma, Nebraska, California (Central and Southern), Illinois and Arizona.  My dad worked for an oil company when I was growing up and my husband worked for the Federal Government for quite a while so job transfers have always been a part of my life. I never really minded, and always found moving to a new place to be an adventure!

20.  What is your favorite flower?

Roses are very nice, but I really love just about any kind of flower.  They are all beautiful and make me happy!

That’s all for now.  Thanks for visiting.

Until next time,

Twenty Questions and Wednesday Hodgepodge

1. Where were you born? I was born in the beautiful state of Colorado, Denver to be exact.

2. How many siblings do you have and what is your birth order? I have an older brother, an older sister, and a younger sister.  I am third of four. The picture is me, my younger sister and my older sister in front in pink.

3. Who sent your most recent text? My husband.

4. Hot dogs? No, not so much.  I would rather have hamburgers.

5. Favorite TV show? The Chosen

6. What car do you drive? A 2024 Honda CRV

7. Favorite Jewelry? My wedding ring, and the eternity ring Charly gave me on our 20th anniversary.

8. Favorite Hobby? Just one?  I really enjoy gardening, photography, hiking, walking, reading, and blogging.

9. What personality trait do you find difficult? Meanness. I cannot abide people who are just simply mean. Unfortunately, I work with some young teachers who have this personality trait.  Not fun.

10. Three things you did today? I read, graded assignments at school, made dinner.

11. Favorite place to be?  Road trips with my husband.

12. Do you like to be alone? Sometimes.  I'm more of an introvert and being around a lot of people can be exhausting.

13. Where would you like to visit? Seeing Europe would be fun, as would an Alaskan cruise.

14. Best advice for a happy marriage. Work things out. Say "I'm sorry" when necessary.  Live the marriage covenant.

15. Least favorite chore?  Dusting.  Ugh. It never ends.

16. What’s your greatest asset? I am willing to admit it when I'm wrong.

17. What is on your dresser? My phone and smartwatch charger, a small Tiffany style lamp, and our noise machine.

18. Worst pain ever? Emotional pain caused by a narcissistic extended family member that has had far reaching impact.  Very sad and hard to deal with, but I am learning and healing.

19. Do you like to dance?  It's fun, but I am not a great dancer at all, and I would only slow dance with my husband in the privacy of our own home.  I would also like to learn to line or country dance one day.  It looks fun.

20. How long has your oldest friend been in your life? I have a couple of good friends who have been in my life since over 40 years - once since Charly and I were dating and the other since we were first married.  Of course I am friends with my cousin, who was born when I was about two, so she would definitely be one of my oldest friends.  I have a few other childhood friends with whom I have connected with on social media, but we are not really close.

Now for some Wednesday Hodgepodge questions.

1. Hey, it's October...what's one fun thing on your October calendar?

Birthdays!  My son-in-law's birthday is today, October 2, my husband and oldest son are both on October 6, My birthday is October 9, my daughter-in-law is October 10 and my soon-to-be six-year-old granddaughter is October 27.

2. Thursday is National Poetry Day (first Thursday in October)...do you like to read poetry? If so, what's a favorite poem, or whose poetry do you especially enjoy?

I am not much of a poetry reader.  I have read, and even taught, a couple of novels that were written as poetry.  They were interesting, but I prefer novels written in a more traditional style.

This is one poem that I have always loved.  Here is a portion of it:

Ode on Intimations of Immortality

by William Wordsworth

Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting

the soul that rises withuse, our life's star,

Hath had elsewhere its setting

And cometh from afar;

Not in entire forgetfulness, and not in utter nakedness,

But trailing clouds of glory do we come

From God, who is our home.

3. Tell us about something you've seen recently that could be described as 'poetry in motion'

I didn't witness it personally, but there was a story on the news tonight about an asteroid that has become a temporary smaller "second moon" to the earth.  I think that the way the planets revolve around the sun and the motions and movement of all the celestial bodies that God created and set in motion are truly "poetry in motion."

4. What's one song on your autumn playlist? Do you have an autumn playlist? If not, pretend you do. If yes, then feel free to share more than one.

This isn't really an autumn song, but it always touches my soul and usually brings tears to my eyes. Amazing Grace is my favorite hymn, and this is my favorite rendition of all time. Josh recently heard this group in concert and he said it was incredible.

5. Share a quote that inspires you this time of year especially.

"I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers."
