Sunday Stealing on Monday and Hodgepodge

I haven't joined in on Sunday Stealing and Hodgepodge for quite a while, but I liked this week's questions, so here I go.

 1) If you could attend a 4th of July fireworks display anywhere in the United States, where would you choose?

I love watching fireworks from my back porch, which I did in June when our town had it's "Orem Days" celebration and fireworks show.  I would also love to see the fireworks in Washington D.C., at the St. Louis Arch and in New York Harbor. All of those places look amazing, but alas, there's no place like home for the fireworks show.

2) What book are you currently reading?

Right now, I'm reading The Secret at Site Seventeen by Reva Davenport, which I should be finished with later today.  I also started, George Washington A Comprehensive Biography by C.W. Lewis.

3) What have you been listening to?

I've been listening to all three of these podcasts in the past couple of days.  John Papola and Dad Saves America, Greg Matson and Cwic Media, and The Matt Walsh Show.  My conservative Christian ideology and philosophy is reflected in my choice of podcasts.  The Dad Saves America podcast had a very interesting line-by-line explanation and analysis of both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, which I would highly recommend.

4) What shows or movies have you been watching?

Friday, we saw Young Washington at the theater.  It was excellent.  Highly recommended.  On Netflix, we watched Grant the miniseries, and Washington.  We've been keeping everything historical and patriotic for the 250th anniversary of our country.

Now, on to some Hodgepodge questions.

1. What's something you enjoy now that your younger self would never have appreciated?

Quiet days with not much on the schedule.

2. What was peaceful about today?

Having a leisurely lunch with my cousin, then spending the afternoon home with my husband, watching a history show on Netflix.

3. It's National Blueberry Day (July 8). Will you celebrate?  You can have one of the following right now-a slice of blueberry pie, a warm blueberry muffin, or a stack of blueberry pancakes...which do you choose?

I eat blue berries almost every morning with my breakfast. They are supposed to be very healthy "super food," and they are quite tasty.

This or that-blueberries or raspberries? blueberries or strawberries?

I like all three, but I eat blueberries most often.

4. Do you need a break? From what?

I often need a break from social media.

5. What has surprised you most about getting older?

How quickly it happened.  When I think about how old I will be on my next birthday, I find it hard to believe that I am that old.  I don't feel as old as I am.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

"And let us not be weary in well doing:  for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not."

` Galatians 6:9

Thanks for stopping by.  Have a good week!

Until next time,

We have two TVs  - both flat screens.

Sunday Stealing and Tuesday 4 on Monday

I haven't joined in on a  Sunday Stealing in quite a while, but this one looked fun.   I'm linking up Here!

I am passionate about ...

1) My relationship with Jesus Christ.

2) My husband and children.

3) My Christian faith and the church I belong to.

4) My home.

5) Politics and current events.

I'd like to learn ...

1) More about the new area where we are moving

2) More about genealogy and family history.

3) More about the scriptures by taking some "deep dives."

4) More about American history.

5) More about nutrition and exercise.

Things I say a lot ...

1) Here's the deal...

2) Really?!?

3) Choices have consequences.

4) I love you.

5) Thank you.

Places I'd like to travel to ...

1) The Holy Land

2) Egypt

3) The Eastern U.S.

4) All of the National Parks

5) Europe

Now let's move right into Tuesday 4, where I am linking up over at this blog.

This week you are the topic.

1. What is something you are proud of that we don't know about?

The things I am most proud of and grateful for are my marriage of 46 years to the same guy, and my four children.  I may not agree with my children on everything, but I honestly believe that they are all good human beings, and I love them all very much.  I'm also very proud of my grandchildren.

2. What subject or things are overrated or talked about too much in your opinion?

I think that the political opinions of celebrities,  music and movie stars, as well as sports celebrities have no bearing on anything.  Their opinions should bear no more weight than anyone else's.  A good example of some highly overrated opinions and political statements were those given recently by some of the Grammy Award recipients.  Billie Eilish's comments when she received her award were ridiculous and meaningless.

3. What things and topics should be talked about more often or are underrated in your opinion?

I think that our society and nation would benefit by having God in more conversations.  We also need to teach and talk to young people about the importance of marriage and family.

4. Are there any things you've changed your mind about in the last few years?

Yes, I have become much more conservative about cultural, societal, and political matters.

That's all for now.

Until next time,

😊Deb💖

Sunday Stealing on Monday

I haven't participated in Sunday Stealing for a while, but the questions this week were pretty good.  I am linking with other Sunday Stealers here.

1. If money was not an issue would you move to a new home?

Yes, absolutely, and in fact, we are planning to do just that within the next year as soon as we can after I retire.   We purchased this home in a beautiful and scenic part of Southern Utah last summer. We may go ahead and do some remodeling and move into it in a few months.  On the other hand, we may hold onto it as an income property to supplement our retirement incomes and buy another house.  Decisions, decisions.  At least we have some options.

2.  Do you listen to different music when you are happy than when you are sad?

When I am happy, I prefer upbeat music - something from the 70s or 80s.  George Michaels and Wham are one of my favorite 80s groups. When I am sad, I don't generally listen to music.  Maybe I should.  I find that while I do love music, I am very emotionally reactive to music, and to avoid that, I don't listen to music very much.

3.  What's your favorite way to unwind after a tough day?

I take a short nap, go for a walk (outdoors if possible) or read.  Sometimes, I will have a Diet Coke as a little pick-me-up if it's been an especially rough day.

4.  What's the first book you remember from childhood?

My mother read to me a lot, but one of my childhood favorites was this book - The Five Little Peppers and How They Grew by Margaret Sidney.  The book pictured below is the edition my mom read to me.  I don't know what ever happened to it, but I wish I had it.

5.  What made you smile today?

A text message from my son, with a screenshot of a silly post a mutual friend made on Facebook.

That's all for now.

Until next time,
😊Deb💖

Sunday Stealing on Monday

I thought that this was a fun Sunday Stealing - looking back in time - so I decided to play along.

 What were you doing ...

My daughters and I took a little girls trip to Washington D.C. in 2005.
Here we are in front of the White House.

1. Twenty years ago?

In the spring of 2005, I was still in my 40s and just finishing up my 4th year of teaching. I taught English at Higley High School in Gilbert, Arizona.  Charly was working as an accountant for Arizona State University.  My oldest daughter had graduated from college, was working and had just met the man who she would marry that fall.  My second daughter was married and she and her husband were finishing up her degree at BYU.  My oldest son Alex was 15-years-old and attending high school.  Josh was nine and still in elementary school.  We didn’t have any grandchildren yet.  Life was busy and stressful, but somehow it seems like everything was easier and clearer than it is now.

Josh with other missionaries in Mexico at a baptism in 2015.
He is the tallest guy on the right end with the gray tie.

2. Ten years ago?

In the spring of 2015, We lived in Gilbert, Arizona. I was teaching at Mountain View High School in Mesa, Arizona. This was hands-down my favorite school to teach at.  Charly had done a career transition from accounting to teaching.  He loved having so much more time at home with the family. Our two oldest daughters were married and we had four grandchildren.  Alex, our oldest son, had graduated from college, (Arizona State University) and was going to be married in the fall.  Josh was serving a mission for our church in Monterrey, Mexico.  Life was busy, and full with a few bumps in the road and a lot of worries.

We had a little family vacation in Yellowstone,
along with half of America during Covid.
Everyone needed to get out of the house
and the National Parks were the perfect places to go.

3. Five years ago?

In May 2020, our nation and our family were dealing with the Covid pandemic.  We were living in Utah, having moved from Arizona in 2017. Charly and I were ending the school year teaching from home.  I was teaching at Taylorsville High School, where I still teach.  Charly was teaching at a junior high in the same district, and decided to retire at the end of the 2019-2020 school year, as many teachers did.  Josh was finishing his first year of college at Ensign College online, and he did not enjoy online learning.  He much preferred being in class with other students and a real, live teacher.  Our older children were all married and dealing with Covid too.  All ten of our grandchildren had been born, and the youngest two were one and three-years-old.

Last spring we took a fun trip to St. George
and got to spend some time with our daughter and her family there.

4. One year ago?

In spring of 2024, I was finishing up my 23rd year of teaching.  I taught English at Taylorsville High School, as I do now.  Charly was retired.  We were living in our 70-year-old house in Millcreek, Utah, having moved from our condo the previous summer.  Josh was at BYU Idaho in Rexburg finishing his final year for his bachelor's degree.  I attended BYU Women’s Conference with our daughter Tiffany and we enjoyed seeing our grandchildren at least once a month. We attended our oldest grandson’s high school graduation.  Life was not perfect, but it was good, as it is today.

Sundays are church days for our family.

5. Yesterday?

Yesterday, I attended church with my husband.  Josh, who has moved back in after graduating from college, went to church in his young adult congregation. I went for a walk after church, and enjoyed a restful Sabbath.

Bonus! What will you do tomorrow?

Tomorrow is another school day - and there will only be 15 more days of school left in the year at the end of the day tomorrow.  I will probably go to the rec. center to walk after school.  Josh will be attending day 2 of orientation for his new job, and then begin work on Wednesday.

Until next time,

😊Deb💖

First Weekend of April and an Honest Sunday Stealing

Here's a little about what happened this weekend in my world.

If you read my last post, you know that our big Saturday event was going to Little Women with our daughter and four of her five children. It was a wonderful play and we all enjoyed being together and experiencing a great production.

When we got home from the play, we had a delicious deli pizza and a green salad. It was very good.

This weekend was our church denomination's worldwide General Conference, which is broadcast on TV and the internet. We were home all day Sunday watching the conference sessions.

We watched the Conference and loved all of the wonderful messages. I took lots of notes.

Sunday dinner was another ham and cheese roll. I had some ham and cheese in the refrigerator which I needed to use, and we enjoyed the ham and cheese roll last time I made it, so I decided to make it again.

I also made a special treat for dessert for our Sunday dinner - something that I don't do often. Charly had bought this Reese's Coffee Cake Mix last time he went shopping, so I decided to make it Sunday afternoon. It was very good.

Weekend gratitude:
  • Seeing Little Women with our daughter and grandchildren.
  • Listening to wonderful messages in our church conference.
  • Enjoying sunny, blue skies and warmer temperatures.
  • Having the entire week off next week for Spring Break!
Praying for:
  • Safe travels to Josh's graduation.
  • Success for Josh in his post-graduation job search.
  • Healing for our son-in-law's knee after surgery, and for my broken foot.
  • Our nation, our economy, and our society

That's about it for our weekend, so I decided to answer the Sunday Stealing questions, so here we go.

1) What's the longest you've gone without sleep

I have had a few completely sleepless nights, usually brought on by anxiety.  I usually go to bed early or take a nap the next day and that helps, but it takes a few nights of good sleep to really feel better.

2) What was the highlight of your last week?

The highlight of my last week was attending the play Little Women with my daughter and grandchildren. We had a great time at a very well-done production.

3) You have to give a 10-minute speech to a group of high school students. What's your topic?

As a high school teacher, I get paid to give “speeches” to high school students.  Mostly, I instruct about the subject matter at hand - reading, writing, grammar etc., but I do give advice on occasion. If I had the opportunity to say whatever I wanted to, without the fear of some parent trying to get me fired, I would tell my students “Get off your phones and off the internet, and live life!  Move out of your parent’s basement as soon as you can!  Be social. Date, get married and have a family.  Get a skill or education that you can use to make a good living. Stay out of debt!  Think long-term!  You really won’t want to be alone without a family when you are 60 or 70 so get married and have children.  Make life work for you!  Be kind and be happy!”

4) What is the single best decision you've ever made in your life?

Hands down, the best decision I ever made was to marry my husband.  I was only 19 and Charly was 23 when we got married and I do not regret marrying young at all!  The second best decision was to have children.  Honestly, I wish I could have had more, even though there are always definite challenges and even heartache involved in raising a family. It is still well worth it!  I wanted six but I ended up with four.  The third best decision was going to college.  My college degree has paid for itself again, and again and again and is still doing so.  Statistics show that college-educated people even have better health and longer lives, in addition to better jobs and incomes.

5) If you could ask a coworker, friend or family member a question and be guaranteed an honest answer, who would you choose and what would you ask?

I would ask family members who are mad at us and don’t speak to us, what we have done wrong, and what we can do to make relationships better.  Then, I would repent, ask forgiveness, and try to do better.

6) Do you cook for yourself when you're home alone?

I’m not home alone much, but if I am, I fix something easy.  Grilled cheese sandwiches are a personal favorite when it’s just me.

7) Do you most often access the internet from your computer, your phone, or your smartwatch?

I have an old MacBook and a desktop PC.  Right now, I am using the desktop because I have noticed my old (2015) MacBook is starting to cause me some eye strain.

8) Do you have more email addresses or phone numbers?

I have no idea which I have more of.  I usually communicate through text, not email, but I rarely make phone calls.

9) What's the biggest source of anger in your life right now?

I’m not really angry, but I am concerned and worried about many things. There are very concerning things going on in our nation right now - things on both sides of the political spectrum. I worry about what is going to happen to our economy under Trumpism 2.0. That being said, I will be completely honest here about what I believe is an even greater danger to our society. I believe that radical ideologies, like "queer theory", "radical feminism", and other evil ideologies that include abortion and transgenderism are destroying our families and our society.  I see this every single day in the public school where I teach.  When our families are gone, our society will follow.  Anyone who doesn’t like the current administration must realize that many people voted for President Trump as a reaction to radical left policies and ideologies. It’s very concerning.

10) Mondays make me feel…

...a bit down because I have to deal with the things I deal with for another week.  I am hoping this changes once I retire.  I would like to feel energized and renewed on Monday.

That's all for this Sunday. Thanks for stopping by.  Enjoy the week ahead.

Until next time,

😊Deb💖
