The Final Weekend of May, and the Beginning of a New Month

It was a mask sewing marathon Friday and Saturday.  I ended up completing 25 masks, which have which were taken to a drop-off point for donations to the Fourth Street Clinic in Salt Lake City, which is a clinic that helps the homeless population.

I made myself a new mask, which I wore when Charly and I took our walk to a nearby shopping center.  I don't wear a mask while walking outside usually, but I always wear one in a store or other public place, and while masks are not very comfortable, I am happy to wear one if it helps either me or anyone else stay well.

Charly put up some hooks so I can hang some pots of flowers as we continue to work on making our back patio a more inviting addition to our home.

There was rioting in downtown Salt Lake City, which is about six or seven miles from where I live, on Saturday afternoon and evening.  This sort of thing doesn't often happen in Salt Lake City.  I wasn't born here and have lived in a lot of different places, but I do consider Salt Lake City my hometown, so I am saddened and disappointed that a peaceful protest turned so violent.  What happened to Mr. Floyd in Minneapolis was NOT in any way right.  A man was murdered and justice is needed, but rioting, hurting police officers and destroying property isn't OK either.

There were also protestors at the Utah State Capitol Building who decided it would somehow help their cause to spray paint obscenities all over the building and grounds - so sad and so uncalled for. Other government buildings in the city, including the main police department building were also vandalized.

Sunday morning, a small army of volunteers started cleaning up the Capitol building. The willingness of citizens to pitch-in and help make things right is part of the Salt Lake City I know and love. Fortunately, the curfew put in place by our governor was observed and enforced by police and the National Guard, and Sunday was quite in Salt Lake City.

Sunday was a quiet day at our home too.  We had church at  home, as usual.  I did my scripture study, sewed a few masks and did some indexing of marriage records from Wisconsin.  Charly and I walked about three miles around the neighborhood.  We have been trying to take our walking up a notch this summer, so we walked two miles Sunday morning, and another mile Sunday evening. The last day of May was warm and windy around here.

Looking ahead to the coming week, I don't have a lot of plans except a dentist appointment on Friday.  I will do some more mask-sewing, and the usual walking and reading.  We will probably go grocery shopping on Tuesday morning.  We changed our shopping day to shop at a day and time when there might be fewer people at the store.  Josh came home from work on Friday with the good news that he will be getting some more hours, which is a good thing.  He will also be working at the Sherwin Williams store he was at before his hours were cut.  He is pleased because he likes that store and the people who work there.  I am looking forward to a good week ahead.

Monday Gratitude - As the week begins,  I am choosing to be thankful for....
  • After a hard time initially getting to sleep last night (too much media consumption over the weekend), I did sleep well.
  • We had an overall nice productive weekend here.
  • Next week seems to be pretty low-key with no much going on.
  • Josh getting more hours at work.
  • Josh going back to the store he likes to work at.
  • An opportunity to serve others by making masks.
  • Encouraging friends
  • Family - I love and appreciate mine so much - even in all their glorious imperfect humanity.
  • No violence or rioting in Salt Lake City Sunday.
  • Living in this great country that is willing to learn from past mistakes and move forward with Liberty and Justice for all! God bless America!
Goals for the coming week:
  • Read at least 100 pages in the new book I am reading The Sundown Motel by Simone St. James.
  • Continue with mask-making and make at least 25 masks.
  • Index at least 25 records.Walk three miles a day at least five days this week.
I will end my Monday post with something to help us begin the week with faith, hope and love - because life is so much better when we approach it with faith, hope and love.  Have a good week!
