First March Weekend

The Weather - is getting colder again.  We have gone from spring temps, back to winter.  Saturday night we had an ice storm and Sunday there was snow.

I'm reading - the same three books I was reading earlier in the week.  I hope to have one or two finished by this time next week.   I have been concentrating on The Maid this weekend.  It is proving to be disappointing for me after all the hype surrounding it, but it has gotten interesting enough that I want to see how it ends.

I'm listening to - these very interesting podcasts.

I'm watching - Inventing Anna on Netflix.  We watched two episodes on Saturday night, and the final episode Sunday evening.

I'm cooking - not a lot this weekend.  Take-n-bake pizzas provided dinner on Friday and Saturday nights.  I made some cinnamon sugar mix muffins on Sunday afternoon.   Sunday evening, I took a few muffins to share with elderly friends from our church congregation.

Other than the muffins, Sunday dinner was the only cooking I did this weekend. We had chicken breast with finger potatoes, broccoli, green salad and "Olive Garden brown bread" with butter.

I'm feeling - much less stressed and anxious than last week.

I'm thinking about - how glad I am that Charly's cancer screening went well on Friday.

I'm praying for -
  • The people of Ukraine.
  • Peace!
  • Help to deal with my anxiety, which was really a challenge for me this past week.
  • Help to deal with family situations with God's wisdom.
I'm grateful for  -
  • More snow - much needed for our water supply next summer.
  • Charly getting a good report from the cancer screening.
  • My anxiety is abating.
  • We have the opportunity to attend church via Zoom when necessary.
  • My faith.
  • My husband - he is a truly good man.
  • All four of my children.
  • All ten of my grandchildren.
  • Hearing from my (ex)son-in-law yesterday.  He didn't have any new pictures of the grandkids, but we emailed back and forth and I found out that he has been able to get a job and he is doing OK.  He sounded a little less depressed than he has been.
  • Being able to sleep better the past couple of nights.
  • Blogging and blogging friends. My blog friends are some of the kindest people around.

Other stuff about the weekend -

Friday, I took a sick day to take Charly to a medical appointment in the afternoon.   I usually get up at 5 a.m., so it was nice to get to sleep in until past 7 a.m..

Because the appointment wasn't until afternoon, I had some time to run some errands in the morning.  I went to the store to get some things, and included some packages of diapers and personal hygiene products to donate to the poor people in Ukraine.

I also bought a woman's coat and vest to donate.

I then took the items to the drop off point for donations for the Ukraine.

In the afternoon, I took Charly to the hospital for his outpatient cancer screening.  The doctor and nurses at the hospital were so nice and professional, the procedure took less than an hour and everything went well. Charly was found to be in good health with no problems, which is such a blessing.

Charly had not been able to eat for almost two full days prior to his cancer screening procedure, so he was hungry when we got home.  It was late in the afternoon, so we got "take-n-bake" pizza and salad for dinner.

Saturday, I went for a walk by myself soon after I got up. Temperatures were in the 40s, but is was gray and cloudy and had been raining.  Sometimes, I enjoy walking by myself, listening to a podcast, which is what I did on Saturday.  After Charly's medical procedure, he decided to take the weekend off of walking.

Later on Saturday, after lunch, Charly and I went to a couple of cities north of here, Layton and Ogden to do some "treasure hunting" in some thrift stores in the area. We went to Savers, Goodwill, Deseret Industries and Salvation Army.  Charly bought a Bose sound system right after Christmas and he is now hunting for CDs of some of his favorite groups from the 70s, 80s and 90s.

Saturday night after dinner, we started hearing thunder. When I looked outside, little balls of ice were coming down hard.

This was the scene I woke up to on Sunday morning. There was not a great deal of snow, but I understand that there was much more in the mountains where it is needed for our water supply.

The mixture of ice and snow made the trees look so beautiful - like a work of art.

Sunday morning, I fasted breakfast, with special prayers for Ukraine and healing and reconciliation in my family.   I did my scripture reading and study. Josh went off to church and Charly and I tuned in via Zoom.  Charly and I plan to start attending church in person again next Sunday.

It was fast and testimony Sunday which, in our church, means that we fast (1-2 meals) and then any members of the congregation who want to, can stand and share their thoughts and testimonies. It was nice to hear the unplanned, impromptu testimonies of other believers.  After church, I did some indexing of Massachusetts tax records and Wisconsin birth records from 1896. I listened to an excellent, spiritually uplifting podcast.

By Sunday afternoon, when I went for a walk, the snow had stopped, and some blue sky was visible through the clouds.  It was still cold - in the 30s.

After dinner on Sunday, I took the muffins and made brief visits to a couple of people from our church congregation.  Charly and I then finished the final episode of Inventing Anna.  After that I got ready for school, then read before bed.  It was an overall good weekend.

I hope your weekend was also a good one.  Thanks for stopping by. Have a great week.

Currently, This Weekend

The weather - is cold!  It was a little warmer by the end of the weekend than it was when I took this picture during our Friday afternoon walk, but it was at or below freezing most of the weekend.  Saturday was sunny and a little warmer,  but still cold.  On Sunday, the clouds were back.

I'm reading - Learned Hopefulness by Dan Tomasulo Ph.D. and Fault Lines - Fractured Families and How to Mend Them by Karl Pillemer Ph.D.

I'm listening to - awesome podcasts like Be Bold, Leading Saints, Follow Him, Real Talk and From Crisis to Connection.

I'm watching - Hillsdale College free online class lectures - on Dante's Inferno and Aristotle's Ethics. Friday night, I watched Dateline.  Saturday night, we watched an episode of Inventing Anna on Netflix. Sunday, we watched our church service on Zoom and I also watched some Youtubes later while exercising downstairs.

At work - we continue to get our students ready for the ACT, which will be given to all juniors on Tuesday, March 8.  Last Friday, all junior had to come to school early to register for the test. I was super excited when the books from the latest Donors Choose project started arriving. These are the first three books that arrived at school on Friday.

I'm cooking - breakfast burritos for dinner on Friday.  I make breakfast burritos with scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns and cheese with some taco sauce thrown in.  Breakfast burritos are becoming an easy and delicious family favorite.

Saturday night I made crunchy taco casserole, with rice and black beans.

Sunday dinner was country fried chicken breasts with mashed potatoes and country gravy.  We also had sauteed asparagus and green salad.  Comfort food.

I'm feeling - overall well and upbeat but tired.  Last week was a busy week, and I didn't get enough sleep several nights.  I had a headache a good part of the day on Sunday.

I'm praying for -
  • The people of Ukraine
  • Peace in Europe
  • All of my children and grandchildren
  • Wisdom concerning some situations and things going on in my family
I'm thinking about - vacation plans for  spring break and this coming summer.  I'm getting excited!

Other stuff about the weekend - Saturday morning, Josh needed some new steel toed work shoes, so I went to DSW with him.

Josh found the steel-toed shoes he needs and I found these great hiking boots on sale for 60% off, and got them with a gift card I got for my birthday last October.

I also went to the library to pick up some books I had on hold.  I am "test reading" these titles, to see if I want to continue with them.  All three books show promise.  I think I will start with The Maid, and then try to recheck the other two if I need more time with them. March's reading is lining up.

Saturday afternoon, I met up with my cousin, Leah Dawn,  for lunch.  We enjoyed having some good food and a good catch-up chat.

Sunday, Charly and I watched church on Zoom. Josh went to the service in person.  After watching the church service, I did some indexing of WWII death records, and some South African records, then I reserved some time at our timeshare condo resorts for some trips we have planned this year.  I am getting excited for the trips we are planning!

I'm also working on a puzzle, but it's going slowly. This puzzle is rather challenging because many of the pieces will fit in several places.

Weekend gratitude:
  • Support and prayers from across the world for Ukraine
  • Nice weekend walks with Charly
  • Having a cousin who is also a friend
  • Upcoming trips and vacations
That's all for now.  Thanks for stopping by. Have a great week!

Pray for Ukraine

My View

I am praying Ukraine and all affected by Putin's aggression.  I say Amen to the statement issued today by the leadership of the church I belong to. God bless all those who are fighting evil forces for their freedom and independence in Ukraine.  God bless our world with peace.

I also love Pope Francis' statement on Ukraine when he said, "I invite everyone to make March 2, Ash Wednesday, a day of fasting for peace," he said. "I encourage believers in a special way to devote themselves intensely to prayer and fasting on that day. May the Queen of Peace protect the world from the folly of war."  I agree with the Pope and yes, I will join in fasting and praying for peace.
