Today's Tuesday 4 Questions about TV.

Let's talk about Television.

1. Do you own a TV, or do you have more than one? Is it old-fashioned or one of the new wide screens?

We have two TVs  - both flat screens.

2. Which programs do you like to watch?

I watch a lot of Youtubes, and the occasional Netflix movie,  but I watch very few shows on network television.

3. Were you ever a soap opera or serial fan, and if so what series or soaps were your favorite?

My mom used to watch As the World Turns when I was growing up, and sometimes I would watch it with her.  I also watched Dark Shadows during summer vacation when that was on. 

4. Is there a TV character that stands out in your mind and if so what makes them special or noteworthy? 

I liked all of the characters from Leave It To Beaver, which was my favorite show when I was growing up.  I also love Lucy!

Now let's move right into Tuesday 4, where I am linking up over at this blog. 

This week you are the topic. 

1. What is something you are proud of that we don't know about?

The things I am most proud of and grateful for are my marriage of 46 years to the same guy, and my four children.  I may not agree with my children on everything, but I honestly believe that they are all good human beings, and I love them all very much.  I'm also very proud of my grandchildren. 

2. What subject or things are overrated or talked about too much in your opinion?

I think that the political opinions of celebrities,  music and movie stars, as well as sports celebrities have no bearing on anything.  Their opinions should bear no more weight than anyone else's.  A good example of some highly overrated opinions and political statements were those given recently by some of the Grammy Award recipients.  Billie Eilish's comments when she received her award were ridiculous and meaningless. 

3. What things and topics should be talked about more often or are underrated in your opinion?

I think that our society and nation would benefit by having God in more conversations.  We also need to teach and talk to young people about the importance of marriage and family. 

4. Are there any things you've changed your mind about in the last few years?

Yes, I have become much more conservative about cultural, societal, and political matters.

Tuesday 4 - It's Time for Fall!

Welcome to Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4... are you ready for Autumn?

Monday,  September 22 is the Autumnal Equinox, the first day of the Autumn season.  

Autumn is the name of the season, and fall is the term for the time of Autumn when leaves begin to fall from the trees.   Let's discuss it.....

1. Are there pumpkins or chrysanthemums on your porch or are you planning on putting some out?  

I have two pots with yellow chrysanthemums on my front porch.  The plant in the pot on the right is farther out in bloom, as you can see, but hopefully in a week or two, I'll have lovely yellow blooming chrysanthemums on both sides of my front porch. I have a "Give Thanks" pumpkin hanging under the flag and a smiling scarecrow on the front porch with a "Welcome Fall" sign, although it is hard to see in the picture.  The flags have been up since the day Charlie Kirk was assassinated, and they also honor the victims of 9/11.  It just felt right to keep the flags up for a while.   No pumpkins out yet because I didn't grow any this year.  I may get one to put out on the porch nearer to Halloween.

2. Are stores around you showing Autumn clothing and decor now?  

Last time we were at our local mall (we walk there every Saturday morning before the stores open), I saw lots of fall clothing in store windows - notably, stores like Hollister, American Eagle, and Nordstroms.    A few places have already started on Christmas, and I expect decorations will be up in the mall before long. 

3. Do you have plans for Thanksgiving yet?       

Yes, right now, our plans are to go to St. George, Utah for Thanksgiving. We will probably eat Thanksgiving dinner at Black Bear Diner like we did last year, and then do some hiking.  Josh will come with us, and we will stay in our timeshare condo.  These plans are subject to change.   

4 . If we can arrange an autumn trip or get away for you, where will you choose to go and why?

We have a fall break trip to Eastern Idaho planned.  It won't happen until mid-October when I have fall break from school.  We aren't really going to see the fall leaves, but I suspect we will see some.  We are going to the town where Josh went to college, Rexburg.  He would like to move back and wants to check out job and housing possibilities there.

Tuesday 4 - It's All About Books!

 

I decided to join in and answer the Tuesday 4 Questions today.  How could I not when they are all about book?!  You can join in Tuesday 4 here. 

1. What are some essential classic books that everyone should read at least once in their lifetime?

I think that everyone needs The Bible at least once in his or her life, but better still, one should read at least a few verses of scripture every day.  I have read The Bible a number of times, and the past few years, I am reading a different translation each time.  This is the translation I am currently reading, The Book, which is a 1986 edition of The Living Bible published by Tyndale House Publishers. 

2.  Monday, September 22, is the first day of Autumn.

Would you make up a list for us of books that you think would make great Autumn reading?

Some of the books I plan to read in the coming weeks (end of summer and early fall) include The Crash by Freida McFadden, Falling Darkness by Zara Evans, 52 Churches in 52 Weeks by David Boice, and The Slow Stain by Connor Boyack. 

3. What genre will we find most in your library? Sci Fi, Romance, adventure, biography, nonfiction, mystery?  What do you like most about the genre?

I have a lot of nonfiction and a good number of mysteries.  Pictured is my "to read" mostly mystery shelf in my basement.  Because I can get many of these titles for my Kindle, I will probably be getting rid of a lot of these books soon.  I like nonfiction books because I like to learn, and the mysteries keep my interest and keep my guessing.  I also enjoy a good historical fiction, like the one I am currently reading.  

4  What book would you like to see made into a movie? Any idea on who should be cast in the roles?

I think that the book I'm currently reading, The Second Mrs. Astor,  would make a terrific movie.  I have no idea who would be good in the leading roles because I don't watch many movies and really don't have much of an idea about who is "in" in Hollywood right now.

Tuesday 4

 Welcome back to Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4 where we try to have fun answering questions about various subjects.

March, they say, comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb.  It is called the windy month like Chicago is called the windy city!

1.  Has March come in like a lion or a lamb in your neck of the woods? 

The first day of March here was pretty nice, but since then, March has been unsettled and stormy.  We got a couple of inches of snow last night and it is still snowing as I write this. I took the above picture as Charly was driving me to work this morning. Fortunately, sun and temperatures in the 70s is in the forecast for next week.

2. There have been some awful storms of late. Have you suffered through them or have you ever suffered through a very bad storm in your life? (if so we wish you well)

We have had some rain and snow here in Utah, but most of the snow has stayed in the mountains. We haven’t had anything like other areas of the country, although there have been some rare tornados here, including one that went through the downtown Salt Lake City area and killed one person in 1999.  When I was little (between 1st and 3rd grade) my family lived in Oklahoma and we went to the tornado shelter at a nearby school several times every year. That was really scary for me when I was a little girl. Also, when we lived in Omaha, Nebraska and my girls were little, I was in the car with both of them, when a tornado hit the area.  I was terrified and prayed to know where to go with my children to find safety.  God guided me to an underpass where I parked and waited out the storm. 

3. Spring begins March 20th and ends with summer on June 20th this year.  Any plans for Spring in general? How about the spring holidays? 

I get a week off of school next month.  We will be going to Idaho during Spring Break, to see Josh graduate from college, and help him move back to Utah where he will stay with us for a few months while he finds a job, saves up money and locates an affordable apartment. We are saving most of our travel for summer time, and have a nice trip to California planned for June.

4.  What are your favorite springtime flowers?  Trees or shrubs?

How about a song with a springtime theme to it that you enjoy?  

I like all flowers, so this is a hard question. I love trees out in blossom, and also forthysia bushes.  I love early spring flowers - tulips, daffodils, as well as those that come a little later like roses and lilacs.  A song about spring time that I like is the Beatles classic hit, Here Comes the Sun.  Spring is a beautiful time of year and I am very much looking forward to it.

Tuesday 4 - Home Sweet Home

I'm joining in again with Tuesday 4 to talk about homes. If you would like to join in, the link is here.

1.  In some places people name their homes or properties. What would you name your home and why?

We called our home in Southern California “Sanctuary.”  We even thought of having a sign made to put near the front door, but we never did. I think that is a great name to give to any home because I want to strive to make my home a sanctuary for me and my family.

2.  Are you more of a romantic or a pragmatist when it comes to the decor in your home?

I am very much a pragmatist.  Our home is furnished with what is functional, practical and within our budget. 

3.   Do you have enough room in your home? Storage space, kitchen cabinets?  What would you add or subtract from your home?

Our current home has about 2800 square feet so it is fairly large.  We have five bedrooms, two bathrooms and a large family room that the previous owners built on to the back of the house. The basement has lots of storage space.  We also have a two car garage and a shed in the backyard.  The kitchen however, is not large and could use a lot more cabinet space.  I would also like a nice large pantry. Our home is 70 years old, and while it was enlarged, improved and  well cared for by the original owners we bought it from, the upstairs bedrooms and bathroom are too small.  The home also has too many stairs for us, and we aren’t crazy about the neighborhood, which, incidentally, is the neighborhood my husband grew up in. We plan to move from this home as soon as we can after I retire.

4.  Is your place really home sweet home ?  Would it be hard to leave it ?   Are you firmly rooted in your abode or would you move if a better opportunity came your way?   

It will not be hard to move from our present home in Salt Lake City. We have already purchased another home in Southern Utah (Ivins), which is about four hours south on the south end of the state of Utah.  It's a nice home with 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. It has an enclosed porch with a hot tub and a large yard with a wonderful view. If we don't move into this house (pictured above), it is because we need to do some remodeling of the house, if it is feasible and doesn't cost too much. If the cost is too much, we will keep this home as an investment and rent it out. We will most likely buy or build another home in St. George where the air is clearer and the temperatures warmer than in Salt Lake City and Northern Utah.

Our children are scattered across the nation, but our daughter and her family live in Utah county, so we are considering buying a condo in a 55+ area which is nearer to her home.  We would live in the larger home in Southern Utah most of the time - especially in the winter (to avoid snow and ice) but we could come up and stay in our condo in the north whenever and for as long as we want to.  This is our plan right now, but it may change. One thing I have learned is that God's plans are best. I have about 15 months left before I retire (maybe less) and we will see what happens.

Tuesday 4 - A Blast From the Past

This week's Tuesday 4 questions were kind of fun so I decided to join in and share some memories of high school.  You can join in too here at  Tuesday 4. 

1. Was there a teen hangout in your town or near it where teens seemed to gravitate? What was a favorite place to go?

Dee's Hamburgers was a fast food place in town where teens liked to go. I seem to remember going there with a few time. Sometimes fights broke out there after football games, but I was never involved in one. Dee's Hamburgers does not exist as a fast food chain any more, but there are a few sit-down restaurants with that name around.

2.  Did you attend your high school varsity games? What high school activities did you enjoy the most?

I attended high school football games with friends and I think we just talked and laughed way more than we actually watched the game. (The picture is an actual photo of my high school football team in action, from the year that I graduated. We were the Bountiful Braves, but a few years ago, the name was changed to the Bountiful Redhawks because Bountiful Braves was not considered politically correct).

I was involved with the high school newspaper. I loved being on the newspaper staff. I was involved in the newspaper all four years of high school (9-12 grades) and even made it to editor my senior year.

3. Did you have any teen idols whose music or acting you just really enjoyed?   What  music did you enjoy most? What movies?

I liked Bobby Sherman for a while, until I realized that he absolutely could not carry a tune. He was just kind of a pretty face. I liked The Carpenters and to this day I think that Karen Carpenter had one of the most beautiful female voices ever. The first concert I ever went to was The Carpenters. When I was a little older, in high school, I liked Billy Joel when he first came on the scene. Piano Man is still one of my all time favorites.

As far as movies go, I saw a lot of them, but the only one I really remember was Earthquake, a disaster flick that haunts me to this day because I live on the Wasatch Fault, which is a major fault long overdue for a big earthquake.

4. Did your school have dances or sock hops and did you attend?

Yes, our school had dances, and I attended three - two girls choice dances and one prom. I don't remember any sock hops. If we had any, I didn't go. The dances I did attend were quite formal. They were a big deal at the school and a lot of fun. I have pictures somewhere, but don't know where at the moment.

Tuesday 4 Questions - Weekends

Today I am joining in with  Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4 for some questions about weekends.

It seems that everyone loves the weekend. What about you?

1.  Do you feel happier as the weekend approaches?  Just how do you feel about weekends?

Because I am still teaching school (about 10 -15 months until I retire) I look forward to every weekend.  I usually get up about 5 a.m. on weekday mornings, but on the weekend, I may sleep in until 6:30 or 7 a.m.. The weekends are the time I get to spend with those I love, like my husband, children and grandchildren.   On the weekends, I can slow down and do what I want to do.

2. What are your weekends usually like and do you do anything special?   Do you attend a church/synagogue?

Weekends for my husband and I are a time to get things done that there was no time for during the week. We also try to do things we want to do and go to special places that we can’t go to during the week.  We also like to get together with family that lives close.  Yes, we do attend church every Sunday, and then we slow down and try to make Sunday a true “day of rest” when we concentrate on more spiritual things.  We try not to shop on Sunday or go out to eat or to performances.  We like to make Sunday a day for worship, rest at home, religious reading and study, and spiritual reflection. 

3. Do you sleep later on the weekend or do you stay up later at all?  Are weekends for catching up on sleep?

As I explained above, I usually sleep in a bit on the weekend - maybe until 6:30 or 7 a.m..  I may stay up a little later on Friday and Saturday night, but usually I am tired and go to bed about the same time.  I usually read before bed and when I start to fall asleep while reading, it’s time for bed, no matter what day of the week it is.  Years ago when hubby and I were younger, we often stayed up past midnight on the weekends but those days are long gone.  

4. Do you read or watch more movies/TV on the weekends or catch up on things missed during the week?

I usually read every night, but I read more on the weekend - especially on Sunday.  Sometimes we will watch something on Netflix on the weekend, but not every week.   We also use our weekends to catch up on chores and errands when we need to, but mostly our weekends are a time to relax and do the things we want to do.
