Another June Weekend

It was another busy weekend. Here are some of the highlights.

Friday, it was my turn for dental work.  I am having a crown replaced and the process started Friday morning.  I was in the dentist's office for about an hour, and now have a temporary crown for a couple of weeks until the new one is made.  The dentist found that decay was starting under the old, ill-fitting crown, so I am grateful that I went in to get it replaced.

Meanwhile at the house, 1-800-Got-Junk came to pick up some items left behind by the tenants who just moved out.

In addition, there was a large plywood shelving unit in the basement that didn't work for us. Charly had about worn himself out trying to pull the nails out it and take it apart, so we had the 1-800-Got-Junk guys take the shelving unit apart and take it away.  They were younger and stronger than Charly, and there were two of them, so they made short work of the plywood shelves. We made several trips back and forth to the house with items we are moving over. We also took a load of items to donate at our local church sponsored thrift store.

I made Mashed Potato Casserole for dinner Friday night. If you are wondering, Mashed Potato Casserole is mashed potatoes with crumbled bacon, topped with breadcrumbs and cheese.  It's quite good and I wanted something soft to eat that wouldn't jeopardize my temporary crown.  On the side, I had two different green salads - kale salad and baby spring mix.

After dinner, we took a several boxes of items from the kitchen over to the house and put them away.  It was fun to figure out the best place to put everything.  I cannot remember how I had things organized when we lived there four and a half years ago. When we got home, I went for a walk by myself (Charly was tired) and listened to a podcast.  It was a very nice evening.

Saturday morning, I packed up all of the "treasures" (Willow Tree Figures mostly) I have in my curio cabinet, and we loaded up the cabinet and took it our house.  I then set it back up in the corner of the living room.   The cabinet itself was heavy to move, and Charly and I struggled with it a bit even though we had a dolly.  As we were trying to get it up to the front door, a young man who lives across the street, who we had never met, ran out of his house and asked if we needed some help.  We graciously accepted his offer and because he is young and strong, the curio cabinet was up the front steps and in the house in no time at all.

After my Willow Tree figurines were back in the curio cabinet, I unpacked a couple boxes with sheets and pillow cases and put them in the linen closet.   Because the house is old (built in 1953 so it is 70 years old this year) the closets are small and it has "old house quirks."  One interesting thing it has that most homes today don't is a laundry shoot which is shown at the bottom of the linen closet. The shoot goes right to a drop down door in front of the washer and dryer area in the basement.

One of the neighbors across the street was having a "moving sale" so of course we had to take a break and go check it out.  The best thing I found was this working crock pot which I got for $5.  My old crock pot quit working a few weeks ago, so I was very happy to get this one for such a good price.

Saturday night, we took a walk after dinner.  It was a lovely cool evening with a slight breeze blowing.  After my walk, I watched TV with Charly for a while, did some indexing of mortgage records from the 1800s and had a nice long chatty conversation with my son Josh.  After that, I did some reading before bed.

Sunday morning, I got up just before 7 a.m.. I read scriptures as I ate breakfast - oatmeal and fruit.  I am finishing up the Gospel of John and will start in Acts in the coming week.  I am also continuing to make my way through the Old Testament, and am now reading about King David  in 2 Samuel.  I am reading the New Testament from the English Standard Version of the Bible, and the Old Testament from The Amplified Bible.  In the past, I have pretty much stuck to the King James Version as most of the teaching in our church is from this version, but lately have been doing my personal study from some different translations, just for variety and perspective.  I always mark and annotate my scriptures, with my personal thoughts and connections to what I am reading.  I am also reading an excellent companion Bible study called Your Study of the New Testament Made Easier.  It is a three - volume set and I am reading the volume that focuses on the Gospels.

We went to church at the congregation near our condo that we have been attending for past four years. This is probably the last Sunday we will attend church here.  From now on, we will be going to the church nearer to the house we are moving to - same denotation, different congregation.

After church and lunch, we took another load of items over to our house. We only stayed about fifteen minutes, basically unloading the car and then returning home to our condo.  While we were out, the skies once again turned dark and it started to rain. We have been having almost daily afternoon rain storms for several weeks. These daily storms make the air humid, but keep our temperatures cool.

For Sunday dinner, I tried a new sloppy joe recipe from my blogging friend Faith over at Gold in the Clouds.  Along with the sloppy joes, we had Asian salad, pork 'n' beans, fresh fruit and chips.  It was an excellent summer dinner.  I made the sloppy joes with plant based "meat"  which we really like and are using more and more instead of hamburger.

Here is Faith's slow cooker sloppy joe recipe, although I admit that I made it on the stove and simmered the mixture for about an hour before serving.  It is really good.  You can click on the picture and it should get bigger.

After dinner, we watched an episode of The Chosen.  We love that series.

After I post this, I will shower, put on my jammies and relax and read until bedtime.  We have another busy week ahead.

Weekend Gratitude:

Recipe Tuesday - Kool Aid Play Dough

Kool Aid Play Dough

Thinking about what recipe I should post for today's Try-a-New-Recipe link up with Lisa at Home to 4 Kiddos, I decided to share a recipe that my daughter recently made with my grandchildren.  Although I have not made Kool Aid Play Dough myself, I will give it a try next time I have grandchildren or young friends visit.  The recipe is a bit different than traditional homemade play dough, and one thing I liked about the batch my daughter made is that it smells better than regular homemade play dough.  It is also non-toxic, so no worries if the kids eat a bit while being creative.

1 cup flour
1/4 cup salt
1 packet Kool-Aid
1/2 to 2/3 cub of water
1 Tbs. vegetable oil

Mix the flour, salt and Kool-Aid together.
Boil the water
Add oil to the water.
Pour some of the water into the dry ingredients and mix with a spoon.  Keep adding water and work the dough until the color is uniform and feels like play dough.

Store the finished play dough in an air tight bag or container  Recipe makes about 12 oz of dough.
